Logo a ubiquitous visual identity
We live in a world where the first impression is very important and ability to make one is a hot commodity. A good logo serves just that goal: to leave a long lasting and easily recognizable visual impression in our mind.
The word logo is coming from ancient Greek. The idea of visual communication was not limited to Greek civilization - many if not all ancient cultures used signs and pictures to communicate words and stories.
With the word logo being translated as word or speech from the Greek, logos are to words as icons are to pictures. The distinction between logo and icons is becoming less and less clear nowadays though, as many logos are a combination of both words and pictures.

Psychological studies have been undertaken on the effect of media on children, and cases where children could identify popular logos even before they have learned to talk have been documented. Not to mention that almost any child can identify few popular logos much earlier than the letters of the alphabet. A good logo is to communication and business what Esperanto is to languages: it cuts across cultural barriers and speaks in one universal visual tongue to everybody.
